Do you want to handle this one? It seems like you've got a grip on it, though I am off work till monday so... I'll let you call it my friend. I'm amenable to anything, the proverbial willow in the wind...

It does seem to have been a "kinder, gentler" forum today. And a lot of new posters, very cool! We could still have something here. A recreational Emergency Grok!

As of right now, you've got the ball and I'm fine with you running with it! If you want to hand it off, let me know...

Take care Bro, catch you tomorrow. J

This "grok-a-thon" is a really good idea, by running it over a longer period of time, better chance that everyone will be able to get in on it. Instead of focusing so much on the early 70's, my feeling is that we should have at least one show from each "era". Selection from the 60's, early 70's (still Pig), mid 70's (through 77), late 70's to early 80's (new Brent), late 80's through 90's (Bruce or Vince). We've got a bunch of excellent choices already suggested for the early 70's group, one mid 70's (10/29/77), one late 70's (11/24/79), and one late 80's (9/18/87). Anyone want to suggest one from the 60's, the 90's and maybe even one from 81-84?

True, but then that complicates THIS grok the mcb started and we're in countdown mode. Was it decided that we would have the Grok from noon until the three shows are done on Saturday? That seems like the easiest thing to do at this stage. But just my opinion.

SDH - the all eras grok sounds good too, I just have a hard time figuring out what an "era" is around here. You have, to some, 1966 through 1969, then 70 and 71, then 72 is an era, 73 its own era, 74/75, then 76 can't posssibly sit with 77 because NOTHING can, so 76 gets its own era, then 77 is like 3 eras because May has to be its own with the 8th being its own eon apart from the era of 77. Then 78 through Feb 79 could be one.

Then, as far as I know, the rest is called the "sucky" era and I think I went to far to have 78 and , gasp, 79 even mentioned.

But I'm sure we can muddle through this mess somehow.

My suggestions for eras would be 66-69 (primal Dead w/ Pig), 70-73 (late Pig), 74-76 (Wall of Sound/Keith), 77, May 77 (or maybe just one 77), 78-79 (?), 80-85 (Good Brent), 85-90 (Bad Brent), and 90-95 (?).

I guess most all of us have different ideas of when GD "eras" begin and end. This is sort of how I have them arranged in my head (all with a large degree of overlap):

1965-67: Garage Days
1968-70: Primal
1971: The Change-Up
1972-74: The Golden Age
1975-76: Refitting
1977: A Cut Above
1978: The Poor Man's '77
1979-81: Early Mydland
1982-1986: Interlude: The Persian Years
1987-1990: Late Mydland
1991: Once more, with feeling
1992-1995: Going Through the Motions

Hey Skuz, I agree that you pretty much nailed it. The only difference for me is I see 87-90/91 as the second golden era aside from 77 on it's own. Not saying it was as good as 72-74 by any stretch, nor would I call it golden era really ( just something other than late brent ) just think the band arose to the ocassion of their new found stardom and with special guests and new technology really put out some tight stuff and other inspired playing.

You have a point and I agree- there was somewhat of a rejuvination during those years, probably deserves more than "Late Brent"

At this point, I feel I've thrown in my 2 cents (and then some) so I will leave it up to the collective consciousness to figure out the what and when specifcs. As far as I'm concered, the more the merrier. Kind of like a Jerry Lewis Grok-a-thon minus the tap-dancing 3 year-old. Or maybe we can work something out.

Let's do the Chinese New Years 80s Grok. I kinda like the idea of showcasing the 80s by themselves 'cause I know I had a helluva good time at a bunch of shows in the 80s. A few bad ones, yes, but I wouldn't have wanted to be anywhere else.

Will do...Actually, that brings up a point that I goofed last eve. when "summarizing the day's events": you & Will Tell came up with some great ideas, namely grokking via iPod or CD-R. I can't speak even remotely intelligibly on the pod, but it seems a friggin grate idea. After the 12/30 grok I played the selected '69 show the next morning, MP3 on the downstairs stereo...

Downloads: I checked into the 4 shows that were originally mentioned and I was able to find them on either GDLive or the Archive. The Brent Site has most all of the 80's shows (79-90). My suggestion would be to nominate songs that we have access to, whether it be a SBD from GDLive or the Brent Site or an AUD from the Archive.

Bittorrents: Not everyone is bittorrent savvy, but seeding a show might be an option for some.

Vines: We could also start a vine if we could agree on a date and show far enough in advance.

Podcast: The other thought I had was a podcast and I just haven't had time to learn how to do it. The rub is that someone would need an mp3 player and we would need a site to host it.

The shows with downloads available seems like the best option to include the most people. I like the vine option as well. I would be happy to work with someone on scheduling Grok dates, finalizing a theme from suggestions (Chinese NY show is a great idea), scheduling voting days for Grok show choices, and communicating the results and where to d/l & stream the show.

Mudcat, as the person who seems to have taken the mantle for this event, I say that you just pick the shows and when it will start. If we just continue to collect suggestions and opinions, I'm afraid nothing will get finalized and for those who need time to load iPods or burn CD's, time is of the essence. I am more than comfortable with you picking some shows from the ones that have already been suggested. I think starting Saturday at 12 EST is a good idea and I think it can go as long as people are interested. I think it would be nice to be able to start the Grok, but then if life takes you away for a few hours, you can return and it still be in full effect.
If anyone is against this, speak now. I fully trust my Maine friend here to pick some quality stuff that we can all be happy with. Remember, if one of your suggestions is not picked for this go round, there will be many more.

Sorry for the spontaneous bail-out last night, guys. I got "wife'd & life'd" again...tho the latter part may have me working again next week. The thought of it plays hell with my vacation, though...

If I'm reading the posts from last night correctly, it now looks like we're talking about 2 Groks? This weekend's "Emergency" & now Chinese New Year's? Sounds great to me. When is Chinese New Year this year anyway?

I agree with a lot of the folks here that the '80's are under-represented. Hell, all my shows were '80-'87 and there are some good'uns in there. I was just listening to the Moscone Center show (5/28/82) last night, matter of fact. I don't think the nominations are "closed" by any stretch of the imagination, so folks should keep 'em coming--I mean, we're not even voting on the line-up, etc till Friday eve.

Cush makes an excellent point in that the original Grok concept was to spotlight a show on its anniversary, as close to real time as we could manage. Hell, if memory serves it was an exchange about grokking Kimbajed's 2/26/77 birthday/first show that got THIS discussion evolving...but the end of Feb. seemed so far away. Need more Dead, need more Grok before then...

Grokking on a show's anniversary is a great concept, though for that reason, I'd personally avoid '77's first half for the immediate future. As others have noted, we've got some MONSTER anniversaries coming up, and in April-June they'll be coming up in clusters...which has got me thinking we've got some crazy groks comin up this spring... I mean, come on, New Haven, Boston, Cornell & Buffalo in one week? Tell me there aren't some multi-show grok possibilities coming up?

As for this weekend, I'm thinking we should still keep the show nominations open till, say, Thursday night, then finalize the vote on Friday. At that time (Thurs.) we'll probably have a better idea of what timeframe the folks out there in Dreamland are looking for: (i.e. "just" 3 shows? How many hours? etc.)

Thanx for y'all's patience with my disappearing act last night. ...So I tell my wife that I've got plans for Saturday. What plans, she's asking. Well, I'm going to spend the day listening to the Dead & hanging out on the Forum.

She wants to know how this makes Saturday any different from any other day? :)

Peace.
